VOLVO Trucks History

Volvo was founded in 1916 by Assar Gabrielsson and Gustaf Larson as a subsidiary of the well-known manufacturer of SKF ball bearings. Partly the name of the new company is a tribute to the progenitor, because in the Latin word "volvere" means to roll, spin.

In 1927 Gabrielson and Larson released the first 10 of their cars. Therefore, the birthday of the company is considered April 14, 1927 - the day after the gate of the factory's first production car Volvo.

The first truck appeared at Volvo on February 20, 1928. It was a one-and-a-half-ton LV40 truck, LV4 (LV - Lastvagn, ie a truck, 4 - number of cylinders, 0 - version of the car). It was equipped with a 2.0 liter engine with 4 cylinders, a capacity of 28 hp. Was a huge success. Produced for two years before the release of the next model - LV60.

The global international corporation Volvo Trucks Corporation includes design and manufacturing centers located in Sweden, Belgium, Brazil and the USA, as well as a large number of assembly enterprises around the world, in some of which the corporation is represented as a co-founder with local industrial groups, in others are directly owned by the Volvo Group. Trucks are manufactured in Sweden and Belgium, and engines are manufactured in Skövde. The plants are located in Sweden (Gothenburg - there is also the main office of the company), Belgium, USA, Brazil, South Africa, Australia, China, India and Russia.

In 2001, Volvo Trucks acquired a controlling stake in Renault's cargo division (RVI), which in 2002 became part of Renault Trucks.

Volvo Trucks is also the owner of such brands of truck manufacturers as Mack Truck (American brand) and Nissan Diesel (now - UD Trucks).

Volvo Trucks for a while (1988-2000) was a co-owner of the famous Swedish truck manufacturer Scania, but in accordance with the decision of the antimonopoly committee of the European Union sold its share of this company's shares on the market.

Volvo Trucks has representative offices and service centers in more than 130 countries. Over 1000 local dealerships in different parts of the world and 1800 technical centers provide sales and maintenance of trucks.

Almost half of the total sales of its new equipment Volvo Trucks in Western Europe, more than a third - in America. Eastern Europe accounts for 6% of gross sales.
