IFA Trucks History

It first model IFA-F9 company presented at the Lepsig fair. It was somewhat different from the first postwar and pre-war machines of the DKW. The F9 had a 3-cylinder power unit, which in 1939 was developed by the company "Auto-Union". These engines on machines DKW, which until 1953 were produced in the West, did not appear.

The working volume of the two-stroke engine is 900 cubic centimeters, the power was 28 horsepower at 3600 rpm. However, for the average buyer the model was too expensive - it cost as much as 13,200 eastern brands.

The cost of model F8 was 8415 marks. It was an exact copy of the pre-war DKW and accessibility for the ordinary buyer also did not differ. However, in the western market, these models were the cheapest.

The first exhibits of the F9 model were assembled at the former Audi plant. However, in 1953, there was a transfer to Eisenach, to the former production facilities of BMW. Most of the IFA-F8 body was made of plywood, but this material is known to be reliable. That is why during the production of the F9 it was abandoned.

On June 1, 1965, the first production IFA W50L truck with a load capacity of 5.2 tons came off the assembly line with a 2-seater cabin above the engine. Its design was very peculiar for its class. Suffice it to mention the 5-step box located separately from the engine with synchronizers on four higher gears, hydropneumatic drive of brakes, a conical main gear and cylindrical wheel gears. Part of the machines at the request of the customer had a lockable differential of the rear axle and a power take-off shaft. Trucks "W50" is almost not modernized. Only in 1969 they had a new parking brake, and in 1973 - a new steering mechanism. Back in 1966, W50L / K dump trucks with rear and 3-way unloading, universal W50L / NKP and isothermal wagons W50L / IKB, truck tractors W50L / S for semi-trailers with a gross weight up to 14 tons.

In 1978, the plant was again renamed and this time became the "IFA-People's Combine of Trucks" (VEB IFA-Kombinat Nutzkraftwagen). Since 1987, the plant has launched a 6 tonne series of "ELISA L60 / 1218" with a total mass of 12 tons. All cars received a new in-line 6-cylinder diesel with direct injection (9160 cm3, 180 hp), a 4-stage fully synchronized gearbox with a 2-step demultiplier, planetary wheel gears, pneumatic clutch release actuator, telescopic shock absorbers in the front and rear suspension, differential lock with electro-pneumatic drive, 3-seater all-metal tilting cab. The greatest demand was for the all-wheel drive variant "L60 / 1218PB" (4x4) with a wheelbase of 3240 mm. The merger of the two Germanies allowed the concern Daimler Benz to claim its property, and in late 1990 the plant was returned to its former owner.
