BelAZ Truck History

The pride of the former USSR, the Belarusian Automobile Plant is located in the town of Zhodino in the Minsk region on an area of 116 hectares. Once in its 24 shops worked 12 thousand people, who collected a year to 5.3 thousand cars.

Now the plant has 7.3 thousand workers, which produce about 1 thousand quarry dump trucks a year. The enterprise is headed by the general director of "BelAZ", Hero of Belarus, doctor of technical sciences Pavel Lukyanovich Mariev.

BelAZ was established in 1958. And its history began with the fact that in Zhodino the production of the famous "quartet" - the 25-ton dumper MAZ-525, which was produced before in Minsk, was postponed. No hydraulic boosters and air suspension seats existed in sight, and the shaking when driving on rock was such that the spine could not stand it. To facilitate their work, the drivers drove the car ... standing. But all the same professional diseases of drivers of those years was not only osteochondrosis, but also gastric emptying.

In a constructive sense, the car was also far from perfect: under the load, its brake pads burned, the devices went out of operation with vibration. But even greater problems were revealed after sending the first batch of MAZ-525 for export to India.

Customers complained that the machines do not switch gears. They sent our experts - everything is in order, they switch.

In 1960, the chief designer of the plant was appointed Zola Sirotkin, who, along with his colleagues in his spare time, designed a 27-ton BelAZ-540 - the one that for a long time was the business card of the enterprise and the pride of all heavy engineering.

In general, the world community should take off the hat in front of the smart heads of those years: our specialists patented a single-seat cockpit and a dump body of bucket type. From erroneous decisions like triaxial MAZ-530 had to be abandoned, and the vector direction of development was the concept of a compact career, the first of which became BelAZ-548A. However, Zhodians did not miss their chance and managed to make some curious cars.

There was even a 65-ton diesel-trolley truck BelAZ-524 with a current collector, like a trolleybus. But the "horned" in the series did not go: well, who will pull the wires on the career cuts. But the first cars managed to surprise Minsk citizens and tickle their nerves - they were tested on trolleybus lines of the Belarusian capital. The development of the model range was constrained by the lack of tires that could withstand a load of 60-65 tons. Meanwhile, the industry required quarry machines of increased payload.

The output was found in the creation of a dump truck. And soon they built a coal car with bottom discharge. When the tire finally appeared, by 1970, 75-ton BelAZ-7509 was developed.

In 1974, his current chief designer, Alexander Egorov, came to the plant. The graduate of the Belarusian Polytechnical Institute began as a foreman of the machine assembly workshop N1 and three years later he moved to the department of the chief designer. In his memory - the creation in 1974 of a prototype 80-ton dump truck, and in just two years - already 120-ton. True, this experience was unsuccessful. The attempt to leave the nodes intact and dispense with a double busbar front wheels led to the fact that the car was characterized by weak stability, excessive oversteer and tendency to overturn. As a result, it never went out of the factory.

The serial 120-tonne, BelAZ-7519, appeared later and later became the "top" model. Not much time passed, and Zhodintsy swung a car with a carrying capacity of 180 tons, and completely from domestic components.

In 1981 BelAZ-7521 appeared, and only two years later he was already working in the Yakutugol association. The cloudless life of the factory workers ended in the era of perestroika. And if it were not for the old guard who gave the factory all its energy, how to know what the giant would be releasing now - hammers and burgers, cast-iron kettles and frying-pans ... But it turned out.

Now BelAZ is one of the seven largest concerns in the world for the production of quarry dump trucks, and it owns 30% of the market.

At present, the plant produces quarry dump trucks with carrying capacity from 30 to 220 tons, as well as equipment for quarrying: front loaders, wheeled bulldozers and manipulators, sprinklers, tow trucks and evacuators.
