IVECO Brand History

The Italian automobile company IVECO was established in 1975 after the division for the production of trucks of the German brand Magirus-Deutz was transferred to the management of the Italian concern FIAT in mid-1974. So, on January 1, 1975, the cargo department was merged with the units of the company "FIAT", such as "Lancia" and "Unic", which also previously specialized in the production of special vehicles and trucks. However, instead of completely updating the production facilities and the model range of the new company, the management of FIAT decided to give the new company maximum freedom. The result was the division of the company "IVECO" into several units, which included one of each company, on the basis of which a new brand was formed. The company "IVECO Magirus" continued the production of fire trucks and ambulances, and the unit "IVECO Unic" retained the production of power units for trucks and commercial vehicles under the brand name "Cursor".

However, in 1978 the first joint model, developed on the basis of all capacities of the company "IVECO", which was called the Daily, was presented. This car allowed to replace in the model number of the concern "FIAT" morally obsolete commercial trucks FIAT 238 and 241. Initially, there were two modifications of the model, weighing 3.5 and 5 tons, but later on the market came modifications in the back of the van and minivan. Under the hood of IVECO Daily there were a diesel engine with a capacity of 72 horsepower or a gasoline engine with a capacity of 78 horsepower. In addition, in 1986, a modification was presented with a turbo engine rated at 94 horsepower. Also in 1980, a family of fire engines based on the "Daily" model was introduced. In the same year, a full-scale upgrade of the full-size IVECO EcoZeta cargo model is underway.

Thanks to successful sales, which allowed to immediately cover all expenses for the modernization and renewal of the company's production facilities, as well as to cover the costs of organizing the work of the brand's plants in Italy, France and Germany, by 1986 a fairly large investment package was formed. Initially, the management of the concern "FIAT" planned to invest in a joint venture with a car brand from the United Kingdom or the United States of America, which would allow expanding the sales markets for "IVECO" products. However, in 1986 the company bought out the British division of the American concern Ford for the production of cargo and commercial vehicles, and in 1987 the brand "Astra" entered the structure of the company "IVECO", which allowed the Italian brand to manufacture dump trucks and loaders.

In 1990, a large-scale modernization of the Italian company's model line was carried out, and the design headquarters was expanded to introduce a series of multifunctional medium-duty trucks called EuroCargo, which received a large number of different modifications. So, two and three-axle forklifts with constant all-wheel drive, tractors and lifts were presented. Under the hood could be located diesel power unit with a capacity of 160 to 228 horsepower, and in 1992, the sale came with modifications with an automatic gearbox. In 2000, an easy restyling of the model took place, and the range of engines was replenished with superpower engines, up to 300 horsepower.

In 1991, the Spanish company Pegaso joined the IVECO company, which allowed the production of buses and a passenger transport line under the FIAT brand. Thanks to this acquisition, the Italian brand starts selling its products in Latin America, opening in 1993 two plants in Brazil. In the same year, the first enterprise of the company "IVECO" was opened in China, as well as the production capacity of the Australian brand "ITAL", which also came under the control of "IVECO".

In 1994, a strategic contract was signed with the Russian brand "Ural", which allowed the production of heavy equipment for work in the extreme north. Also, production of super-heavy trucks for the exploitation of oil and gas companies on the territory of Russia and China was established. And in 1995, in Turkey, the Italian company opened a new plant, which began to produce mobile and autonomous stations with diesel power units, which are in great demand from the utilities of Turkey, Romania, Slovakia, France and Italy.

In 2000, the IVECO model line was completely updated, and a contract was signed for the production of armored cars and special equipment for the Italian armed forces. And in 2001, another Spanish brand, "Irisbus", was incorporated into the firm. As a result of the transaction, a strategic agreement was concluded with the French concern Renault, which transferred a 49.5% stake in Irisbas to the Italian company. In just a few years, thanks to this acquisition, the company "IVECO" becomes the largest bus manufacturer in Europe, occupying more than 60% of the entire transport market.

Also in 2002, a new model of the company was introduced, called Stalis. The trunk tractor was able to occupy an empty niche in the model range of the Italian brand, and also allowed to expand the production of power units of a new generation. So, under the hood of the model there are diesel engines Cursor power from 260 to 460 horsepower. In 2004, a large-sized IVECO Trakker dump truck with 310 or 360 horsepower diesel engines was introduced. Also new types of transmissions were introduced - 9 or 16-step mechanical gearboxes and a stepless automatic gearbox with control by means of a manipulator rather than a lever.

In 2007, IVECO signed a cooperation agreement with the Russian company KamAZ, which allowed the production of armored cars under the IVECO brand, intended for the Russian armed forces. A year later, at the facilities of KamAZ, the production of components for the assembly of all the current models of the Italian company was started. In the same year, with the large investments of the company "IVECO" in Egypt, the construction of an enterprise for the license assembly of trucks "KamAZ" begins.

After the beginning of the global economic crisis, the company "IVECO", for the first time in its history, suffered losses. However, according to the firm's management, this was due only to a large number of investments in new technologies and enterprises, and not a fall in demand for the products of the Italian concern. However, by 2010, the share of the brand "IVECO" in the market has decreased from 65% to 55%, which was facilitated by the opening in China of a new joint venture of the Italian brand and Chinese investors, which since 2012 produces trucks under the brand "DongFeng".

In 2012, the company "IVECO" signed a new contract for the supply of armored cars and heavy trucks with the armed forces of South Korea, Argentina, Chile and South Africa, once again coming to profit. However, after the acquisition by FIAT of a new stake in the American firm Chrysler, it was announced that between 401 and 2020, IVECO would release more than 15 exclusive models for the United States market and only 5 for the European market.
