STERLING Trucks History

In 1997, in the USA, the company STERLING TRUCK CORPORATION, the world's youngest but already authoritative manufacturer of heavy trucks, was created in the USA in October. It became the final chord in the struggle of enthusiasts for the preservation of the famous STERLING brand. There are five companies with this name. We know little about the first of them (only that she produced several trucks with a base length of 88 inches and lasted only two years (1909-1910)).

For the second, this name was almost its own, the name was given to it by the founder of Willaim Sternberg (in 1907-1915 he had a company for the production of trucks under his own name). Unlike the first - the second firm lasted much longer (1916-1953), it was something she remembered. In 1951 Sterling merged (until 1953 some models were still produced only under the Sterling brand) with a slightly larger WHITE firm, forming Sterling-White.

Gradually (in 1957) the name Sterling emerged from the company's lineup and remained in non-existence until 1973, when it was handed over to a small company from Kansas City, which specialized in the production of truck cranes and emergency tractors. But also there the Sterling brand did not last long, until 1982. As you know, this name was given to the former cargo department of FORD, which in late 1997 was sold to FREIGHTLINER (Daimler-Chrysler concern). The production of all trucks was transferred to Canada.

Now they carry the silver emblem of STERLING, with the exception of the Cargo model, which by agreement will be produced by FREIGHTLINER, but sold under two brands - FORD and STERLING. It appeared as a result of the acquisition by Freightliner of the cargo department of Ford Corporation, renamed to "Sterling".

The large investments of DaimlerChrysler corporation, which includes both companies, allowed in just two or three years to restore at Sterling the production of the average boneless range of Cargo 4x2 / 6x4, to start the production of low-profile chassis Condor of the Canadian division of Freightliner, to significantly modernize and expand the range of inheritance from the "Ford" series "L" and "A", which used to bear the names of Louisville and Aeromax. Since 2000, these series are offered with a very impressive front lining.

The former gamma "L" is called "Acterra", and one of the most expensive and comfortable is the new Silver Star tractor with a power of up to 500 hp, air suspension for road trains with a gross weight of up to 62.6 tons.
