FREIGHTLINER Truck History

Freightliner Inc. founded in 1942. It produces trucks using, as a rule, diesel engines from Cummins, Caterpillar and Detroit Diesel, also part of Daimler AG.

As of 2005 - the largest manufacturer of heavy trucks in North America with annual turnover of more than $ 32 billion and a staff of more than 22,000 employees. During the Second World War, the company undergoes the entire burden of wartime, because equipment and materials were delivered extremely untimely. The company is forced to rebuild capacities for the production of components for aircraft construction and ramps for landing craft.

In 1944 the plant in Utah in general had to close, and the production of tractors was transferred to Portland, where in those days the headquarters of the company Consolidated Freightways was located. In 1947, Freightliner, led by Conservative Freightways Vice President Lester Cassebaum and under the direction of plant director Ken Self, resumed the production of tractors in Portland. Cassabaum remains at the helm of the company until 1951, until Tom Taylor took over the general management, resuming the production of tractors with a cab above the engine.

In the post-war years, Freightliner not only manages to get back on its feet, but also significantly expand production. The company significantly multiplied its traditions, making the active use of aluminum alloys a priority. Technologies developed, but not implemented in production during the war years, are mastered in the production of cabins, crankcases for driving bridges, brake drums, spars, wheels, radiators and frames. In 1947 the company again activates the production of tractors in the territory of Portland.

Initially, the production of tractors was carried out with the aim of improving its own Freightliner fleet. In 1948 the first tractor, assembled at this enterprise, was sold. The model, made almost entirely of aluminum, had a cab in the form of a bubble. The car was called Model 800. Two years later, Hyster from Portland ordered a Freightliner tractor that had a sleeping compartment. Soon such a variant of the tractor became popular.

Later, it began to be equipped with a 10-speed transmission with a half-meter cardan transmission, because such requirements were put forward by Hyster. The tractor was equipped with a cabin specially equipped for long-haul transportation. She also received a special device, thanks to which you can pour sand under the wheels for frost or ice, an adjustable Bostrom chair and a tachometer recording all the readings. Thanks to the high sales volume, the reputation of Freightliner as a company producing excellent tractors has been strengthened for a long time.

In 1950, the company began to produce up to 100 cars a year. In 1951 Freightliner decides to sign a dealership agreement with the Ohio White Motor Corporation of Cleveland. This transaction was very successful. At the beginning of the next decade, truck sales increase to 1,000 copies per year. In 1973, Freightliner demonstrated an entirely new Conventional series tractor. After 5 years, the company opens its new plant for the production of major components and components, located in North Carolina. In the early 80's Freightliner is one of the leading automakers.

This fact attracts such a giant of the automotive industry as Daimler-Benz. The latter unsuccessfully tried to promote the truck-tractors Mercedes-Benz in the American market. In 1981, Daimler-Benz buys one unit from Consolidated Freightways. Thus, Freightliner becomes a well-endowed engineering company. In 1992, Freightliner became the leading company that sells the heaviest class of cars in the US market.

In 1995, the company bought out American LaFrance, which produces fire trucks and ambulances. In 1997, Freightliner bought from Ford a whole unit engaged in the production of medium-sized tractors. Freightliner renamed it Sterling. Today the company is one of the largest manufacturers of commercial equipment in North America.
