Corbitt Truck History

In 1899, Richard John Corbitt from North Carolina, engaged in the supply of tobacco, began to produce cars, and in 1907 began to produce cars-buggies. Its first 1.5-ton truck with chain drive firm "Corbitt" built in 1910 in the US Army it was used during the First World War, which allowed in 1916, significantly expanding its program, to supply cars brand "Corbitt" in 23 countries of the world.

In the 30-ies. a small firm offered the US Armed Forces a wide range of commercial trucks, tractors and dump trucks with a payload of 1.5 to 8 tons, equipped with units of different manufacturers. In 1933, she became one of the main manufacturers of military vehicles and began to receive large state orders on a regular basis. The first batches of army trucks were militarized civilian versions of F (4x4 / 6x6), developed together with the firm Marmon-Herrington and equipped with engines Hercules, Continental, Waukesha or 72-124 hp Lycoming, Brown-Lipe, Wisconsin or Fuller bridges. The first light weightless armored car T9 (4x4) on a serial 1.5-tonne chassis of the 1935 model received a series 8-cylinder Laikoning engine with a capacity of 94 hp, weighed 3.6 tons and developed a speed of 80 km / h.

They made 22 copies, adopted for service under the standardized M2 index. The reinforced version with a 12.7 mm machine gun was designated M2E1.

A new stage of military development dates back to the late 1930s, when the Second World War began in Europe. At the request of the US Army Artillery Directorate at the end of 1939, the firm built a prototype 6-ton, 6-ton, 6-ton, korbitt-AA truck for towing anti-aircraft guns, which received a 6-cylinder Hercules NHC engine (12.8 liters, 165 liters .c), a 4-speed gearbox with an additional 3-speed gearbox, a revetment from the production car, a V-shaped windshield and 22-inch tires.

In the first post-war years the company continued to actively develop fundamentally new military machines. According to the project of the Cook brothers in 1947, she collected two prototypes of the 8-ton artillery tractor T20E1 (8x8) with an extended cab above the engine and an anterior 2-axle driven by a leading cart with single wheels. They installed a 320-horsepower Continental engine, a hydromechanical 4-speed Fuller gearbox, a 3-stage Timken dispenser, and a winch with a pulling force of 27 tons. The onboard version T20E4 received a mechanical box. In the fall of 1946, a promising 12-ton tractors TZZ (8x8) with two front driven axles, an original star-shaped 9-cylinder Continental engine of 450 hp air cooling, a mechanical transmission and a 7-seater cabin was built. Variant ТЗЗЕ1 was distinguished by hydromechanical 3-step box Spicer. Tractors weighed 17-23t, developed a speed of 88 km / h and had a power reserve of up to 500 km. All of them remained prototypes.

In the early 50's. Corbitt supplied its army tractors D800N35 (4x2) and 800V60 (6x4) with diesel engines Cummins (150-200 hp) to the army and the US Navy, as well as D404 (6x6) single-seat hatchless crane chassis D404 cabin. The deteriorating financial situation forced the company in 1952 to cease its activities.
