DAF Truck History





The brothers Hubert Josephus and Bill Anthony Vincentius van Doorne, better known as HubiVim, April 1, 1928. They opened a mechanical workshop in the premises of the former beerhouse in Eindhoven, where metal cabinets, windows and stairs were assembled. Since 1932 the company has received the name Van Doorne's Aanhangwagenfabriek trailer factory, abbreviated as DAF, and since 1934 specialized in car semi-trailers with four rear wheels mounted in pairs on transverse springs.

The success of these cars in the Netherlands and neighboring countries allowed to increase the volume of their output from 150 in 1949 to 3100 in 1954, to master special and bus chassis and since 1953 to significantly expand the production area of ​​the enterprise. In 1955, the production of new series 1100, 1300 and 1500 with a lifting capacity of 5, 6 and 7 tons, respectively, and a total weight of 8.4-11, Leyland with a working volume of 5750 cm3 and a power of 105 hp began.
With the completion of the construction of the engine shop in Eindhoven, the licensed production of English diesel engines 0.350, which received the designation DD575 and adjusted to a power of 120 hp, was launched. They were installed on new 1600 and 1800 series with a total mass of 12-14 tons. Since the end of the 50s the company also produced its own gasoline engine BB475 (155 hp).

In 1976, trucks DAF F2300 with a gross mass of 16 tons debuted with a diesel engine DH825 (156 hp) or its variants DHR825 (204 hp) with a turbo and DHU825 with a turbo-supercharging and intermediate cooling (230 hp). The cars were offered in 4x2, 6x2 or 6x4 variants with a wheelbase of 2850-3650 mm and a cabin F241 with a berth. Since1977, they were complemented by the F2100 series with the new F220, which is generally identical to the F241, but equipped with a rollover mechanism.

Since the mid-80's. The release of the new flagship F3600 series with the diesel DKZ 1160ATi with a capacity of 373 hp has begun. By the same time, the creation of the AF company by unique trucks of all-wheel drive cars for participation in the rally-marathon Paris-Dakar is referred to. In the 1984 races, the FAV 3300DKX2 variant, nicknamed the Beast, with two 340 and 420 hp engines, participated. and two cabins - front and rear. At a total mass of 13 tons, he developed a speed of 160 km / h. A year later, this option appeared in a lightweight version with a single cabin.
He weighed 11.5 tons and reached a speed of 165 km / h. In 1986, the start was the FAV 3600DKX2 Turbo Twin II with two engines of 495 hp, which allowed for the first time in the world to surpass the speed limit of 200 km / h on a heavy commercial truck.

The second half of the 80's. was marked by major acquisitions: in April 1987, a contract came into force for the purchase of the largest British truck manufacturer, the former (Dahl Panorama of Leyland, and one with it and a small company Freight Rover from Birmingham) department of Leyland-DAF, and in December 1986 a series of delivery vans DAF V400 with a total weight of 2.8-3.5 tons, representing a copy of the English models, was introduced in three years. In 1994, a sensation was caused by the FT95 car with the Super Space Cab with an internal volume of 10 m3, a height of 2255 mm from floor to ceiling, and a sleeping bed width of 810 mm.

Meanwhile, at the new DAF plant in Taipe, assembly of the 45 and 55 series with a total mass of 6.5-15.0 tons with 6-cylinder Cummins diesels (5.9 liters, 132-211 hp) began. In 1992 there were new series 65, 75 and 85 with a total weight of 18.0-34.0 tons with diesel engines with a power of 181-401 hp, multistage gearboxes and air suspension. Since 1998, their upgraded versions with the CF (Compact Forte) index have received a more streamlined cabin, tapering to the front, and engines up to 430 hp. The new heavy truck DAF 95XF (Extra Forte) won the title Truck 1998.
